Savage Beauty

A few days late on this one BUTT the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art was a smash! I've pulled together a few of my favorite looks from the night and am still drooling over some of them.

Liv gets my vote for this round. The gradient of white to pale yellow is beautiful! The sculptural elements through the bodice butted up against the delicate feathers at the hemline is fabbbbb. I just wish the hair was pulled back into a bun so we could see the neck line.

Enjoy the eye candy peoples!

BETSPIRATION

The lease has been signed and the moving truck is reserved! My dream living room is no longer a dream and now I have plotted out my dream bedroom!

I haven't had a pink room since I was eight. HOWEVA, after seeing the combination of bubblegum pink and canary yellow in Betsey Johnson's home....it just might be time for me again. Here's a couple shots of her fabbbbbulous home and a little collage of what I hope to scrape up! Enjoys!

SHOE DON'T KNOW ME

OMG SHOES.
This is way more than an obsession. I don't think I'd even wear these lovelies. They would probably make a home front and center on my mantle (if I had a mantle). And if I did ever go for a jaunt, I would probably get two steps and fall over. Better stick to the imaginary mantle. Enjoy the shoespiration peoples!

Long Time No See

I know it has been a while since Dierdre and I have posted anything...We've been busy little buggars. Hopefully these humorous vintage pictures will make up for it. One of my fave blogs, DESIGNLOVEFEST featured these photos today. I particularly love the second one. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Anthropologie Decorator Concept Shops! Say whaaaaaaaa?

While catching up with Apartment Therapy I stumbled upon some of the greatest news I've heard in a long time. Anthropologie recently announced that they will be opening up a limited amount of Decorator Concept Shops this coming Thursday! Twelve cities will welcome concept stores. By the grace of God, Chicago is one of the chosen cities! The shops will be open to anyone and everyone to wants to stop in and play designer. If you aren't lucky enough to live in one of the chosen cities; NOT TO WORRY! A special web only section called 'for the decorator' is scheduled to launch soon as well.

I will probably never own a piece of furniture from Anthro, but I've always loved walking around the stores for inspiration. Their in-store installations are beyond incredible. I added a couple pictures of Anthro installations that I saw this summer at the Rockefeller Center store. The chair below is HANDFREAKINGMADE in Senegal and for sale on the website/in stores. While the gorg lighting fixture to the right is made of recycled dried teabags. As I said, I can't bring myself to shell out the cash for furniture at Anthropologie, but I couldn't resist a little dream online shopping. I love all the quirky animal items; from the small accessories like elephant hardware to this lobster rug and goat bench. The floral Chandelier reminds me of one of my allll time favorite designers Tord Boontje. And what adorable pooch couldn't want to curl up on that ottoman??

Enough gushing. If you can check out one of the new Decorator Concept Shops and BE INSPIRED!

Schtuff I'm into right now

Donald Glover is all over the place these days.
His stand up show aired on Comedy Central.
He wrote and created characters for 30 Rock.
He is acting on Community.
He is an incredibly talented rapper.

Here's a couple links for some Donald lovin...

Anybody catch SNL last saturday? I did not. BUT My dad of all people raved about the musical guest. So I checked her out. Her name is Jessie J.

Reasons to love Jessie J.
She started out writing for Chris Brown.
She co-wrote 'Party in the USA' (admit it you've definitely screamed the chorus in the car, shower or a bar)
She is from London Town.
Girl loves a good jumpsuit.

Her first single 'Do it like a dude' didn't exactly tickle my fancy
...might be one of those that has to grow on me
HOWEVERS
Jessie's song 'Mamma Knows Best' blew me away. Watch out Xtina, Jessie J has an insanely soulful voice.

Last but not least here's one last leetle treat for the ears.
LOVE 'All of the Lights' and was nervous to hear the remix but it too is the bomb.com

Enjoy Lovas!

Stephan meet Jonathan

While flipping through the Jonathan Adler twipics I discovered that JA's right hand man in interiors, Ben, recently redecorated the green rooms at the Colbert Report. Here are some not so great before and after shots. Benny the Brit definitly uped the patriotic factor that's for sure.
If I find any better finished product pics I'll be sure to post them.

I'll leave you with a great Stephan quote

"But this show is not about me. This program is dedicated to you, the heroes. And who are the heroes? The people who watch this show. Average, hardworking Americans. You're not the elites, you're not the country club crowd. I know for a fact that my country club would never let you in. But you get it. And you come from a long line of it-getters."

Have a good weekend errrybody!

Art Skewl Friends | Kaylee Thomas

I want to start catching up with old friends from Art School. SOOOO I figure there is no better way then to feature their work on my blog!

First up is Kaylee Thomas. We met in Problems in Design 2 with Monica Correia (we both skipped Problems 1 and were equally lost in 2). Somehow we both survived and went on to take more classes together than I had taken with anyone else.

Kaylee has a completely unique style unlike anyone else I have met. I won't try and explain it... I think her work speaks for itself.

Check out my interview with Kaylee and make sure you take a peek at her portfolio!

MC: What have you been painting since I last saw you? Are you still doing tooootally psychedelic schtuff?
KT: After I graduated college I finished painting my room which ended the chapter of my psychedlic squares that I was doing in our Painting 4 class. So I was kind of stuck and didn't really know what to paint without Dunlap's help. So I decided that I would paint the people that have inspired me, hoping that well.. it would inspire me. So naturally I painted The Beatles, John Lennon, Elvis, Biggie Smalls, Michael Jordan, and other people that have influenced me in one way or another. And luckily I was putting those pictures on facebook and started selling paintings that way.

MC: Who is your favorite professor and why?
KT:Favorite professor, hands down Mr. David Dunlap. He loved art, and loved it no matter what you would try to do as long as you loved it. I could sit and talk to him for the whole 3 hour class period, which I did sometimes. He would motivate you and encourage you to go on with your ideas, unlike some teachers who just well, made you feel stupid and would try to change them into what they thought would work. David put all faith in his students artwork. I love that man, he was so wonderfully weird in his chicken suits and shirts that would have random live ants crawling out of the pockets. I wish I had more teachers like him in college. Now that i'm paying back school loans.... which is awful.... I look at it that he made the debt im in worth it.

MC:Have you entered any competitions? I thought I saw a pic of you winning something?!?
KT: Over the summer I entered a few things. I was asked to paint "yoga dogs" for a 3-D kids movie, Shakey. I believe that it was filmed in Naperville and Chicago. But that was pretty intense. I had 4 days to paint three 5 foot paintings of different dogs doing yoga positions. Luckily I can not sleep for a few days and still have arm functions. I had everyone in my family working on these paintings while I was at my "other job" aka waitress. My grandpa built the canvas, my mom primed them, I would paint out the design while i would go to work my mom would fill in the soild color area's. It was an intense few day, I was painting up until the art director came to pick them up at my house. I also entered a beatles art contest, where I felt at home. Everyone around me loved everything that I loved, it was a giant love fest. Unfortunately the second I walked into the art gallery I saw this awesome replica of the Sgt. Peppers lonely heart clubs album cover... which was made out of peeps... I knew instantly that my boring ol' painting didn't have a chance to beat that. But I won third place, which I was really excited about, even I voted for those dang peeps so I guess im a gracious loser. It was really excited hearing what people had to say about my paintings especially because the whole thing was anonymous so they wouldn't know that the artist was standing right next to them... luckily they were all nice things or else that would of been a terrible day.

MC: AND of course you have to talk about the pugs...
KT: Since school ended I have collected more and more pug stuff. Pug lamp, pug rug, pug ordaments, pug clock, and we we're even thinking about getting another baby pug.. but decided we didn't want to be too obsessed. The best pug related thing I've done so far was I painted my grandparents (the starters of the pug family) as grand-pug-parents for Christmas. It was a show stopper around the christmas tree, I had to give it to them after they had a few drinks so they could really appericate their faces as pug faces.

Dream Living Room

I've been pulling images of furniture and accessories for a while now. I shove them into a "inspirations" folder on my computer desktop where they will probably sit for a very long time.
BUT for now I am going to put my online shopping to use and put together inspiration boards for my own dream rooms!
<< To the left is my Inspiration Living Room. I lurve the eclectic style sprinkled with metallic accessories, flower arrangements and muted but bold prints.

AND here is my collection of images that I hope with someday make up my very own Dream Living Room!

Anybody ever heard of the French band/singer Yelle? If her name doesn't ring a bell her song Ce Jeu probably will. It was on the soundtrack at Forever 21...forever. So if you've spent any time in the store in the past year and a half you probably heard it at least once. If not here she is along with a couple mashups/remixes for fun.

Who the bieber is Esperanza Spalding???

Ever since Justin Bieber lost the Best New Artist ... o em gee tragedy... to Esperanza Spalding, I've been wanting to learn more about her. SO naturally, I wikipedia'd her. I'll quickly regurgitate some facts for you...
(Pssst..... don't you just love this picture Drake is such a gentleman and she looks sooo grateful!)

As I'm stalking Esperanza, I am finding that she is kind of a super genius. And by kind of I mean TOTALLY. She taught herself to play the violin by the age of five and began playing with the Chamber Music Society of Portland soon after. She was home-schooled for the majority of her early life and when it came time to go to high school she tried, but quickly became bored. SOOO she dropped out and got her GED on
her own by the age of 16. She moved right along to the music program at Portland State University, where she remembers being the youngest bass player in the program. She transfered to the Berklee College of Music, where upon graduation at age 20, Esperanza was immediately hired as a professor.

Here's a couple more facts to make you feel like a giant pile of lard...
-Esperanza plays the guitar, upright bass, bass, violin, oboe and the clarinet.
-She sings and speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese.
-She has performed at venues such as the White House and alongside legends like Stevie Wonder. Yeah I just said STEVIE mother-efing WONDER. He first heard her play a few years back and invited her to perform with him.

I think if the bielebers had been a little more informed as to Esperanza's enormous talent, they may not have hacked into her Wikipedia page ... just kidding there is no cure for Bieber Fever...not even more cowbell :(

The video below isn't of the best quality, but skip again to min seven where Stevie invites Esperanza on stage. Below that one is a Esperanza performing "I Know You Know" its not bad, the girl knows how to jam.

OH NO SHE DIDN'T...or he didn't?

Not to point out the obvious but...
long locks of hair
creepy mustache and scraggly beard
white jacket / black slacks
sunglasses at the wrong time of day
at this point I wouldn't be surprised if John Mayer moved to France and started speaking in an accent. O well the man looked good and nailed his performance with Norah and Keith.

Now onto the ladies...
OBVIOUSLY we have two totally different looks here, however there is no denying the striking resemblance between the two fabrics. And I hate to say it, but I don't know that I'm convinced by either one of them. Since the Grammy's are supposed to be fun, I have to give it to Ciara on this one. Natasha is a little too sweet here, she's usually more edgy and sporting fun vibrant colored gowns.

Uh ohhhh......my girl Kim's dress is lookin kinda like Grammy nominee Leann Rimes' dress. This one is hard for me but I have to go with Leann?!?? Gawd this is hard, but as much as this dress is slightly swallowing her, its better than people worrying about you bursting out of it. ...Can't believe I just said that...Kim's never going to talk to me again. BUTT (pun intended) when it comes to the whole package, I think Kim's is looking a bit more put together. Love her hair and jewels, especially that Lorraine Schwartz snake bracelet! Leann's hair is looking more like a temp facelift ... mean i know sorries!

Born this Way by GaGa & Express Yourself by Madonna... just sayin.

Don't want to say too much BUT give these two a listen (not that we haven't all heard Born This Way enough this past week).
Tell me your thoughts. I am interested in how original people think GaGa is and if she gives her mentors enough credit?

And can't forget this egg/womb last night ... again thoughts?
